Two Screening Machines with Different Strengths

Vibrating screens and trommel screens both separate material by particle size, but they move the material in fundamentally different ways. A vibrating screen uses controlled vibration to stratify particles on a flat or inclined deck. A trommel screen rotates a cylindrical drum so the feed tumbles, advances, and passes through openings along the drum.

Neither design is universally better. The correct choice depends on feed condition, target size, capacity, available space, required accuracy, and the amount of sticky or irregular material in the feed.

How a Vibrating Screen Works

An exciter applies linear, circular, or elliptical motion to the screen box. Vibration repeatedly lifts and rearranges the material bed. Smaller particles move toward the screening surface and pass through the apertures, while larger particles travel to the discharge end.

Inclined screens use deck angle and gravity to transport material. Horizontal screens use controlled elliptical or linear motion and fit plants with limited headroom. Banana screens use several deck slopes to maintain a more uniform bed depth at high feed rates.

How a Trommel Screen Works

A trommel, also called a drum screen, consists of a rotating cylindrical screening surface. Feed enters one end and is lifted and tumbled as the drum turns. Fine particles pass through the openings, while oversize moves toward the end discharge. Internal lifters, spray bars, brushes, or segmented screen panels may be used depending on the application.

Shafted trommels use a central shaft or internal support arrangement. Shaftless designs create a more open internal passage and can be useful when bulky, tangled, or irregular feed could interfere with a central shaft.

A vibrating screen is normally the stronger candidate when:

· the plant requires high throughput per unit of floor area;

· accurate classification or several product sizes are required;

· the feed is crushed ore, aggregate, coal, or another reasonably free-flowing material;

· a compact machine must integrate with crushers and conveyors;

· screen media must be changed to accommodate different products;

· the process needs high-frequency dewatering or desliming.

For general aggregate production, an inclined vibrating screen is widely used. A horizontal screen is useful in mobile crushing and screening stations or buildings with limited vertical clearance. A banana screen should be evaluated for high-tonnage feed with many fines or near-size particles.

When to Choose a Trommel Screen

A trommel screen is often suitable when:

· the feed is wet, variable, lumpy, or contains material that benefits from tumbling;

· gentle agitation is preferred over high acceleration;

· the process combines washing, scrubbing, or spraying with size separation;

· feed contains irregular pieces that can be difficult to distribute on a flat deck;

· the application is placer gold, alluvial material, soil, compost, municipal waste, or certain construction and demolition streams;

· a long residence time supports separation or cleaning.

Trommels are not immune to blockage. Fine sticky clay can still coat apertures, and very precise fine separations may require a different machine or a secondary screening stage.

Compare the Complete Cost, Not Only the Purchase Price

The economic comparison should include foundation and structure, conveyor lengths, power, water, screen-media consumption, cleaning time, bearing and drive maintenance, and lost production during shutdowns. A cheaper machine can become expensive if it needs frequent manual cleaning or cannot meet the target product specification.

Ask the supplier to state the assumed feed grading, moisture, bulk density, separation efficiency, and operating hours behind the recommendation. Where the feed is uncertain, a test with representative material is more reliable than selecting from a catalog capacity alone.

Can Both Machines Be Used in One Flowsheet?

Yes. A trommel can perform initial washing and removal of large irregular material, followed by a vibrating screen for more accurate sizing. Alternatively, a vibrating grizzly or scalping screen can remove coarse rock before a downstream drum. The best arrangement depends on which machine removes the most difficult fraction first.
